Rust Server RAM Calculator
Rust RAM is driven by map size, player slots and plugins, and it climbs through a wipe as the map fills with structures. Set your map and pop, and this estimates the busy-day peak, then points you at the plan that fits.
The whole map lives in memory.
Size for a full wipe-day pop.
RAM by server shape
| Server | Map | Busy-day RAM | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small friend group, vanilla | ~3000 | ~5–6 GB | Gold (9 GB) |
| Standard, some plugins | ~3500 | ~8 GB | Gold, Platinum if busy |
| Large map, higher pop | ~4250+ | ~9–10 GB | Platinum (10 GB) |
| Big modded community | 4250+, heavy plugins | 10 GB+ | Ask us for custom hardware |
Map size is the biggest lever
Rust builds its whole world from a map size number and a seed, and the entire map sits in server memory along with everything players build on it. Going from a 3000 map to a 4250 map is not a small step, it is a large increase in terrain and entity count, and it shows up directly in RAM. If you want to keep memory and cost down, a smaller map with more frequent wipes is the lever, not a bigger plan.
CPU matters alongside RAM: Rust leans on strong per-core performance for the server tick, so a busy base-heavy wipe can be CPU-bound even with memory to spare. The Platinum plan adds a third core for exactly that reason.
Plan for a busy wipe, not the first hour
A freshly wiped Rust server is light. Then players build, place deployables, and fill the map, and memory climbs all week until the next wipe resets it. The mistake is sizing a server to what it uses an hour after a wipe; do that and it runs out of headroom on the busiest day, which is exactly when you least want a crash. The calculator estimates the busy end on purpose.
Which HostSimple plan
| Plan | Specs | Good for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | 9 GB RAM · 2 vCPU · 20 GB NVMe | Small to mid friend-group servers, vanilla or light plugins | $24.99/mo |
| Platinum | 10 GB RAM · 3 vCPU · 40 GB NVMe | Larger maps, higher pop, heavier plugin sets | $29.99/mo |
Both start with a 7-day $1 trial and you can move between them without losing your wipe. Full details on the Rust server hosting page.
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM does a Rust server need?
A small vanilla friend-group server on a 3000-size map runs in about 5 to 6 GB. A standard 3500 map with a decent population wants 8 to 9 GB, and a large 4250+ map or a modded server with a full Oxide plugin set climbs to 10 GB and beyond, especially late into a wipe. Rust holds the whole procedural map and every built structure in memory, so the number grows through the wipe cycle rather than staying flat.
Why does map size matter so much for Rust RAM?
Rust generates the entire world from a map size and seed, and that whole map, plus every deployable, building block and loot container players add, lives in server memory. A 4250 map is not a little bigger than a 3000 map, it is dramatically more terrain and entities, which is why map size is one of the biggest levers on RAM. Smaller maps with more frequent wipes keep memory down.
Do plugins increase RAM use?
Yes. Oxide (uMod) or Carbon plus a handful of plugins adds a few hundred MB to around a gigabyte; a heavy plugin set with events, economy, kits and zone managers can add two gigabytes or more. Plugins are one of the main reasons a modded server needs the next plan up from an equivalent vanilla one.
Does RAM go up during a wipe?
It does. A freshly wiped map starts relatively light and climbs as players build bases, place deployables and fill the map with entities. Size the server for a busy wipe day, not the first hour after a wipe, or it will run out of headroom exactly when the server is most populated.
Is 8 GB enough for a Rust server?
For a small to mid-size vanilla or lightly modded server, yes. Our Gold plan is 9 GB, which covers most friend-group and small-community servers comfortably. A large map with a high slot count and a heavy plugin set can exceed 10 GB deep into a wipe; for a big public community server, ask us and we'll size dedicated hardware.
