How the Calculator Works

Our calculator estimates RAM requirements using a formula based on four factors: base server overhead (the JVM and Minecraft server process itself), per-player memory (each connected player consumes RAM for entity tracking, inventory, and loaded chunks), mod overhead (modpacks add memory for custom blocks, entities, dimensions, and scripting), and world size (larger worlds with higher view distances keep more chunks in memory).

A vanilla Minecraft server uses approximately 1 GB of RAM as a baseline just to run. Each player adds roughly 25 MB for vanilla or up to 60 MB for heavily modded servers. Modpacks like All the Mods, RLCraft, or Create: Above and Beyond can add 2-4 GB of overhead on top of that.

These estimates are conservative — we round up to ensure your server has headroom for peak activity, garbage collection, and temporary spikes when players explore new chunks or trigger complex redstone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much RAM do I need for a Minecraft server?

A vanilla Minecraft server with 10 players needs approximately 1.5-2 GB of RAM. Modded servers with 100+ mods may need 4-8 GB or more depending on the modpack and player count. Use the calculator above for a personalized recommendation.

Does more RAM make a Minecraft server faster?

Up to a point, yes. Sufficient RAM prevents lag from garbage collection and allows the server to keep more chunks loaded. However, beyond what your server actually uses, extra RAM won't improve performance — CPU speed and storage type (NVMe vs SSD) matter more at that point.

How much RAM does a modded Minecraft server need?

Light modpacks (1-30 mods) typically need 2-3 GB. Medium modpacks (30-80 mods) need 3-5 GB. Heavy modpacks like All the Mods or RLCraft with 100+ mods need 6-8 GB or more. The exact amount depends on which mods are installed and how many players are online.

Is 1 GB of RAM enough for a Minecraft server?

1 GB is tight even for vanilla. It can work for 1-3 players on a small world, but you'll likely experience lag during chunk generation. We recommend at least 1.5 GB for a smooth vanilla experience.

Does NVMe storage help Minecraft server performance?

Yes. NVMe SSDs deliver up to 7x faster read/write speeds than traditional SATA SSDs. This directly impacts chunk loading speed, world save times, and backup performance. All HostSimple plans include NVMe storage.
